4th Grade Red claim victory over Mixed in tight derby

The second 4th grade men’s derby didn’t disappoint over the weekend, as the table-topping Red side claimed a 2-0 victory over their White counterparts.

Red received a massive boost before kick-off with the return of Tim Eviston from an ankle injury, while White once again called down Jack Rindo and Isaac Maginnis from 3rd grade to bolster their side.

The mixed team would start with a bang, firing the first shot of the match through captain Naomi Keith but it would sail over the crossbar.

As the clock wore on, the game would develop into more and more of arm wrestle, with Josh Loiterton and Lachlan Hayes causing havoc through the middle for the Reds, while Mitch Kunnen starred for White with a number of darting runs from the back.

The deadlock would finally be broken in the 30th minute, with a corner kick landing at the feet of Chris Page, who’s strike deflected off White defender Thomas Norman, and into the back of the net.

Despite numerous chances for both sides, the teams would head into the break with the Reds carrying a handy 1-0 advantage.

White’s cause wasn’t helped by the loss of both Rindo and Maginnis for the second half due to their 3rd grade duties.

Red came out swinging in the second stanza, sending through ball after through ball in the hope of piercing the White defence, but their scramble would be too strong.

Kunnen and Keith, as well as Nathan Maher, continued to cause trouble for a frustrated Red defence, but couldn’t manage to get the ball past goalkeeper Declan Gilkes.

A lapse in defence would find White back Rachel Gibbon marking three players, resulting in Loiterton finding Page off a cross, an opportunity he wouldn’t let slip as Red extended their lead to 2-0 midway through the second half.

Despite a number of blinding runs from Connor Morey and Peter Lulham down the edges, Red simply couldn’t get past the newly-steeled defence from the mixed team, particularly Andrew Schuster and Emily Jacombs.

The fulltime siren would bring an end to a tightly fought contest, with Red taking the points over a vastly improved White team.

The mixed team will now turn their attention to Eglington while the Red will take on Panorama FC, though both teams will have an eye on the next derby in late July.
