Men’s Red best spirited Mixed side in first ever 4th Grade derby
CSUFC’s first ever fourth-grade derby has resulted in a convincing 4-0 victory for the Men’s Red team over the Mixed White team at Proctor Park.
It took just 13 minutes for the deadlock to be broken. Chris Page sliced through the defence before nestling the ball in the bottom right corner to hand 4th Grade Red the lead.
The first half was a tightly fought affair with end to end action keeping the crowd entertained and resulting in some great goalkeeping by Mixed White keeper Jonathon Harding.
The Men’s Red team were starting to become frustrated with their passing and were soon guilty of defensive lapses – resulting in a few chances for Mixed White striker Naomi Keith. However, Red keeper Declan Gilkes was ably protected by his back four and was rarely tested.
Despite trailing at halftime, Mixed White were impressive with their commitment and pressure which was causing cracks in the Men’s Red defence.
However, the second half was all Men’s Red as they doubled their lead through Lachlan Hayes’ tidy chest down and finish.
While the Mixed side where showed plenty of heart on the field, continued possession for their opposition proved difficult to handle and the lead would stretch even further. Chris Page grabbed a double as he volleyed home smartly from close range to extend the lead to three.
The Men’s Red team continued to pile on the attacking pressure which caused some frustration within the Mixed White defence. After the constant pressure, Connor Morey scored the Men’s Red fourth goal with a classy finish from outside the area – which resulted in an unfortunate hamstring injury to Jonathon Harding who gave his all attempting to make the save.
Despite trailing by four goals, the Mixed White team didn’t show any signs of giving up and finished the game off strongly. Nathan Maher received players player for the side while Connor Morey was awarded the honour for the victorious Men’s Red.
Both teams will now look to rest and recover with a two-week break from football thanks to university holidays.
