Charles Sturt University 3 – 1 Abercrombie
As Charles Sturt University’s top-tier football side took on Abercrombie in the Bathurst Men’s Premier League, fans and players alike were expecting only one result. Another loss.
The Red and White outfit has seen only 3 points this season, courtesy of three draws with lower-league table sides. The rest of their matches ending in defeat.
With Saturday being the annual ‘Old Boys & Girls Day’ for the club, Mitch Kunnen’s outfit had a shocking surprise for club alumni and fans. Most of whom had travelled considerable distance to Bathurst to see the sporting spectacle – despite previous results.
The squad entered half-time 3 goals ahead, an unexpected twist that left the crowd wanting more. Club legends of past, Aaron Reilly and Bryan Warren leading the vocal onslaught from an ecstatic sideline.
Goals came courtesy of Darius Benzy and Mitch Kunnen, two attackers who have really hit form in recent matches.
As the second-half got underway, CSUFC struggled with fitness as players had just returned from their mid-semester break. Abercrombie managed to sneak one past an otherwise flawless Lachlan Balcombe in goal.
The squad managed to come together as a cohesive unit and deny Abercrombie any points. Special mention must go to Blake Sanders, Brock Brierly and Ryan Burgoyne for their defensive excellence.
Despite the Charles Sturt side being out of finals contention, the players are continuing to implement a great team spirit and enjoy their football.
The team has had an incredibly difficult season, but despite their lack of league points, all of the boys have had a great time this year. Plenty of hijinks off-the-pitch leading the way to positive team chemistry and a thriving club culture.
Up the Stags!
