BDFA best CSUFC in second annual Headspace Cup

Bathurst District Football Association have evened the ledger at one win apiece after two years of Headspace Cup wherein CSUFC go head to head with the association for most wins on the day.

A close fought race came down to the final 3pm matches as the BDFA edged their university rivals 11-9 on points, where a win was worth two points and a draw one.

It was a fairly even start to the day as our 3rd Grade Ladies White side captured CSUFC’s first victory care of a 1-0 win over Collegians – the goal being scored by Kirrily Lazarus. However, the scores were even after the 9am games as our 4th Grade Men fell victim to a spirited Eglinton side at a 2-0 scoreline.

11am saw four matches contribute to the Cup tally, with points fairly evenly split across the grades. 3rd Grade Red Ladies romped to a 5-0 victory over City Red Tops, 3rd Grade Men played out a tough 0-0 draw with Collegians, 4th Grade Mixed went down 6-1 to Panda FC while 2nd Grade Ladies rounded out the time slot with an unfortunate late 1-0 loss.

It was up to the 2nd Grade Men to try and square up the scores prior to the highly anticipated 1st Grade clashes, but it was always going to be a tough ask as a 2nd placed Abercrombie side showed – taking the lead in the opening minute. A red card to Ryan Burgoyne didn’t help the Stags’ cause as they fell to a 5-0 defeat.

Heading into the final three First Grade matches, CSU trailed 9-5 and had no choice but to win all three clashes if they were to retain the cup. First Grade White completed their end of the bargain with a 5-0 victory over Panorama Black while 1st Grade Ladies also added to the CSU tally with a 3-0 win over Oberon Tigers.

However, it wasn’t to be for the Stags and Vixens as 1st Grade Red fell to a quality Abercrombie outfit at an unflattering 4-0 scoreline.

Congratulations to the BDFA for taking out the Cup for the first time, but we will be back with a vengeance next year!

Thank you to everyone who donated generously to our cause, including our fellow Bathurst clubs and referees – this day couldn’t have been such a success without you and we sincerely appreciate your contributions. And a big thank you to the firies for coming down!

See you same time next year!
