The CSU 4th Grade Mixed team have fallen over late in their match against City Red Tops, losing 1-0 in another testament to the team’s recent growth.
Both sides came out firing early on, with several tackles earning the ire of the referee.
Kirrily Lazarus returned to the side after a month’s absence, setting the tone for the match after a colossal slide tackle brought down one of the Red Tops’ bigger defenders.
Despite a buildup of pressure built on CSU’s defensive line, no through balls would get past centre-back Mitch Kunnen.
Fresh off his first clean sheet of the season, goalkeeper Jonathan Harding was outstanding between the sticks, pulling off a number of stunning saves.
Despite the defensive pressure, CSU weren’t without chances of their own, with Ben Neely coming close on a number of occasions.
After losing to the Red Tops 15-0 earlier in the season, heading into halftime at 0-0 was a massive achievement for the mixed team.
Lazarus was involved in a number of heavy collisions early on in the second half, with an opposition defender earning a yellow card after a badly timed tackle on the CSU midfielder.
Unfortunately for the mixed outfit, a defensive lapse saw an overlap of Red Top attackers, resulting in the ball finding the back of the net – the first goal the students had conceded in close to three hours of football.
Shortly after the goal was scored, defender Jack Blyth earned his first yellow card of the season, dissent landing him in the referee’s book.
City Red Tops would only build further pressure after their goal, pushing up the field, with only Harding’s superb keeping stopping the score from extending.
The full-time whistle may have signalled a 1-0 CSU loss, but it rang as a reminder of how far the team has come since that 15-0 shellacking they suffered in late April.
After letting in 54 goals in their first 8 games, the mixed team has now only conceded a combined total of 3 goals in their last three games.
The mixed team will now enjoy close to four weeks break before facing Panda F.C. on July 9.
